One of the difficult aspects of being promoted through the various levels is that the day

eventually comes when a Referee finds that he or she is going to officiate with two neutral

colleagues on the touchline. Indeed, for some Referees this can be a problematic experience.

Many such Referees have gone through the earlier stages of their career, when they operated

alone, without adopting the useful on-field habit of glancing across occasionally to that position on the line where a Neutral Assistant Referee would normally be operating. Consequently, come the big day and the neutral colleague may well be unintentionally ignored by the Referee.

A missed signal or one seen very late can put real pressure on a Referee.

It is a good idea, during the months of that particular season when you are hoping for

promotion, to watch more experienced Referees in action. Try to see just when they glance

across to their colleagues with the flag, and note how they try to make sure that play around the ball is kept between the Referee and the Assistant Referee as often as possible.

When you are running the line yourself, note and remember how often the Referee glances

towards you and looks for your flag-signals.

Go with a colleague at a similar stage of his career to yourself and watch the experienced

officials in action. Talk through together what they are doing in terms of co-operation.

All that has been mentioned here so far is part of your education process as a Match Official,

so do not neglect it. It will also do you no harm to carry on like this throughout the rest of your career, for this is how FIFA Officials become so competent on the field of play. They are the people who, when coming up through the ranks, are always ready to ask and discuss matters with more senior colleagues, be they Referees, Assistant Referees or Assessors.

Quite clearly, if when you are on the field you are not going to miss a signal from your colleague with the flag, you will need to be constantly aware of your positioning. To be able to ‘look properly through the play’ towards the line, you will have to forsake that shallow, up-and-down-the-middle patrol-path and move wider and deeper.

Being prepared to adopt those wider positions is something that you might easily do when, for example, the ball goes out for a throw-in by the attacking team. Go along the touchline to a point where you can easily see across the field to your colleague on the far side.

Prepare properly for every game you are allocated. Always arrive at the ground early enough to spend time talking with your colleagues about how you want to co-operate during the game ahead. This will probably mean that, as Referee, you have asked your colleagues to be at the ground at an agreed time. If possible, why not try to travel together in these vital early day of your career when you are new or relatively new to working with neutral assistance? That way you will be adopting a helpful habit that will continue throughout the years ahead.

It is certainly not easy when you first operate with Neutral Assistant Referees. That said,

however, there is obviously much that you can do yourself to make your life on the field easier, as suggested here.

A mentor appointed by invitation … your own invitation! … may well soon see you in a situation where, at this challenging stage of your career, the problems of not missing your colleague’s signals or even of not quite knowing just where he is on the line do not seem to be such big problems after all.

Work hard at it, and you will be surprised at how natural it soon becomes to be just where you

need to be in order to see clearly just what you want to see when you are refereeing.

The Assessor attends a game of football in order to see it. A statement of the obvious, you might say!

But consider that little word ‘see’ for a moment. Its three letters can lead us into three aspects of the game which the referee should always be trying to encourage and, in fact, guarantee. For that reason alone, the assessor will be interested in what happens.

S means SAFETY. The assessor will be observing to what extent the referee is aware of all those factors that add up to the safety of the players. The condition of the field and its appurtenances, the player’s footwear, shinguards and, of course, jewellery are all matters to which the referee must give due attention if he is to satisfy the critical eye of the assessor.

E means EQUALITY for both teams and for all players individually. Two wrongs do not add up to create a right, so there must be no trying to balance things out if the referee recognises that he has perhaps made an error of judgement. If the referee acts honestly in every one of his decision-making actions, the assessor will be generally satisfied. Indeed, an assessor may be most interested to note what happens in the seconds and minutes immediately following a ‘wrong’ decision. How do the players react? Do they feel a sense of injustice? What kind of underlying respect do they have and maintain for the referee? How does the referees cope with the situation?

If a referee can provide the SAFETY element and link it to EQUALITY in his game, then the third E will probably follow automatically. This is ENJOYMENT for players, for the officials of the clubs, for the spectators and for the referee and his colleagues on the line. Oh, and of course for the assessor!

KEEPING OUT OF TROUBLE

Trouble for match officials can be the result of a gradual build-up of circumstances and incidents, or it may arise quite suddenly. We often talk of flashpoints or turning-points, or even fare-ups. It pays the referee to be mindful of several factors out of which trouble on the field often arises, for they can all lead to the kind of flashpoint that may well prove to have an effect on the final outcome of the game. A flashpoint, a wrong decision, a controversial only goal in a cup-tie is very important to a referee, and his assessor will not be slow to detect it. If you can help to minimise the flashpoints, so much the better.

So, again, let us look at the ‘letters game’, briefly this time. Think of those unfortunate officials who are calledBLIND REFS by partisan spectators!

B — BENCHES. Trouble often starts in the technical area.

L — LANGUAGE. Ignore the bad language and violent conduct often follows.

I — INJURIES . Be aware of exactly how the injury occurred; accidentally or otherwise?

N — NORMS. Norms, or standards. Are your standards as high as they should be?

D — DISSENT. As has been said many times before, totally ignore dissent at your peril.

R — RULES. Be fully conversant with competition rules as well as the laws of the game.

E — EXTRA-TIME. In cup-ties, tiredness often leads to frustration during extra-time.

F — FREQUENCY. Be alert to players becoming guilty of persistent infringement.

S — SUBSTITUTES. Follow the laws ‘to the letter’ regarding substitutes.

A FINAL THOUGHT

Some referees try to ‘cop out’ of important decisions, sometimes even hiding behind the work of the assistant referee. Have you ever thought that by ‘copping out’ you are just denying yourself the kind of experience that will eventually stand you in good stead. The referee who decides that ‘copping out’ is acceptable practice is usually the referee who ‘gets found out’ at higher levels. And when that happens, it is all downhill from there!

I wish you the best of fortunes in your refereeing, but always do what you can to help yourself and that way you will gain much from your assessors also.

Ted Ring
